Every once in a while I have a wish granted on my Paper Back Swap list. I can select my titles and have them on automatic request so that if I'm first on the list, as soon as the book is available, it will be mailed to me for FREE! If you have special conditions about books that you want, you can let the sender know, as in dust jackets, non-smoking homes, etc. The only drawback is that one must have patience to wait.
This arrived this week and gave me ideas for a "someday" tea party for my students. They would love to celebrate and I am thinking this spring would be an excellent time for a reward for their diligence and practice in improving their reading skills! I saved $19.95 and the book and jacket are in perfect condition.

Celebrating Tea Time

We're celebrating T.T.T.'s Second Birthday!

I'd love to be knocking on Sandi's door tomorrow to celebrate Tea Time Tuesday with her in person. It's been TWO years since she started being our hostess. Congratulations!
This teapot with roses was a Christmas gift from Wally's sister. She is so cute and gets so excited when you open what she knows is the perfect gift. Her excitement is as much of a gift as is the package.

Now in your mind we're singing Happy Birthday, Dear T.T.T., and then as soon as we finish singing, out pops:

"I'm a Little Teapot, short and stout.
Here is my handle...

Here is my spout!"

And since this is a party, there's lots of chatter, laughs, and time for a blessing before we begin to eat. We hold hands in friendship, over long miles, and quietly ask the Lord's blessing for all in attendance, thanking Him for our Tea Time Tuesday friends, and praising Him for the fellowship we experience with Sandi's talent and commitment to bringing us together.

And now for the food...did you know you could have stopped by this wee grocery store and picked up nearly everything that we have on today's menu? The teapot measures 4 1/2 inches and is not hollow, although the lid comes off. How about that shadow? I left this picture "in" because of it. That is our afternoon sunshine at work!
The grocery store caught my eye while in Denver and was $1. A fair price I thought. It reminded me of my Lilliput Lane and David Winter cottages but had "Hometown Teapot Cottages" on the bottom. There are others in the set, so I'll keep my eyes open for one.
Sandi, Thank you for letting me join the fun when I have things together. It takes a lot of time to do this each week and to celebrate TWO YEARS is amazing! Not only are your pictures and tea things lovely, your words are beyond beautiful. We are blessed that you share this talent with us each week. Tell your family that we appreciate them, too. Holiday Tea

On a warm November day I was busy outside turning these trees from green to frosty winter white. They were going to go on the mantle or hearth, but were too bushy so they were put on top of the old entertainment center. Sarah thinks I need to get rid of it, but it comes in handy for storing a ton of church music and a few other things.
As we have a tradition of leaving things out until after Sarah's birthday in January, the trees were pretty to look at for my holiday tea for my dear friends. My 50 cent etched glass tea pot from our church rummage sale held mini ornaments as our table decoration. I used my new cake stand as a serving piece for some scones, gingerbread, and eclairs. Christmas cash and Pier I!
My trips to the city and the larger grocery stores are interesting and they always have new products to discover that aren't available here out on the eastern plains. This cooking creme was new and I added a bit of powdered sugar to it to serve with the raspberry scones. It has almost the same consistency as sour cream, but is not as tangy, especially with the added sugar. The container had ideas how to use it in other recipes and I must get more next time to try them out.

Our tea time was not exactly High Tea (or a cream tea), but I had to have cucumber sandwiches! I used what I had at home for the bread...Sara Lee thin style buns. They are flat like pita bread and this weekend I even found some mini buns when I got my mom's groceries! I would have rather had rye bread, but I don't run to town for just one item. The sandwiches looked so plain that I shredded some carrots because the curls I made were too big.
We enjoyed our late afternoon soiree by sampling, sipping and chatting and before we knew it, the sun had gone down and it was dark! We are too old to wait for the moon to come out or go down for that matter! I think this group of friends should do tea more often!
Totally unrelated, but I really love my new mantle clips that I discovered before Christmas. I about killed Alex's flat screen TV with a stocking hanger that you can see in the first picture when I was moving things around. They are going to be so much safer AND I will be using them for more decorations during the year. In a few more days it will be bye-bye Christmas and hello Spring. I'll just skip Valentine's Day and move right on to the pastels that I love the most. ♥♫

Daisy

Daisy is my girl that I made when I promised my First Graders I'd bring a POLAR BEAR to school if they could bring in 100 milk jugs to make an "igloo" to celebrate the 100th Day of School. This celebration is a big one for children in K-1 as they learn about the place value system in math.

After residing in the "Princess" bedroom for several years, Daisy wanted to go back to school . It was getting rather crowded in her room when Maxx stayed over during Christmas and she wanted to be with some girls who'd understand her better than a boy, like Maxx. Because I was so happy to have a real grandson staying with me, I let her spend the holidays at school waiting for the girls (and boys) to return. Now she wants to stay and is at the reading table in my classroom ready to work on her words for 2012.

2011 Memories

Everyone is reviewing 2011. Thought I'd do my small part, but I rarely link to the bigger blogs because I blog to satisfy myself. I don't kid myself about being a gifted writer, and tend to be brief and direct. If I'm going to read something, I want it to be a book, so I skim a lot out in the world of blogging. I do love all the eye candy I find and tuck those ideas into my memory bank! I am a visual learner, so that makes sense to me. (Strange then that I have no pictures today. Perhaps I can add them later).

In 2011 Sarah was married to the man I've prayed for even before meeting him. Alex is THE best-and he blessed me with the cutest grandson, Maxx. Happiness is the three of them here at home on Christmas morning (or any other morning) as it was so much fun to watch Maxx. I heard he had said that he didn't believe in Santa, but on Christmas Eve I peeked in his bedroom and asked him if he believed. He told me YES and I said that is the RIGHT answer because it is the SPIRIT of LOVE and GIVING that is Santa at our house.

Two of my pet babies left me in sorrow this year also. RooRoo, my crippled kitty that was born in the laundry room with two broken front legs, lived inside, but was fond of coming out with me into the garden. She had a unique way of getting around and when she was a baby, hopped like a kangaroo.

What can I say about my biggest baby? BooBoo always thought he should be a lap dog. That is something rather difficult when you are a Newfie. Each of our boys has had their own personality--this guy hated the lawn mower with a passion and wanted to tear it to pieces. You would have feared for your life if you saw him attack it. But the only damaged he could ever do was knock someone over if you weren't expecting him. Or I guess he could have gotten you with his slobber, but he didn't really slobber too much. Once there was a baby raccoon that got into his doghouse and he would NOT chase it out. He just barked and barked until I thought I'd go deaf. Instead, I had to chase the little critter out for him. Not the bravest of the boys.

2011 was the year I kept up with the pasture grass, a monumental task for me alone. But I didn't do so well with the weeds around in the back. It was also a year of simplifying around the house which means I took things OUT to the thrift stores, and limited myself on what came IN. My plan is to continue this into 2012. (I know Wally would be jumping for joy at this proclamation). In many ways Alex and Wally are alike and Wally would have been thrilled that his baby girl found such a nice person. Alex--you can jump after you learn how to mow the grass and pull weeds! :-)

Christmas 2011

Santa has a date with our family on December 24 each year. He magically appears after my nephew heads back to a bedroom for a nap after dinner. We welcomed Chloe nine days earlier this month and she's already to tell the big guy in red what she's thinking~and he is listening intently...

And here's Mom, big sister, Olivia, Santa, and Chloe. Mom and Santa are closely related, as in brother and sister!
Here's Alex's son that was able to fly in the day before to be my grandson! Yea!! I've been missing Maxx since the wedding this summer and am so happy to see him again.
One of two pictures I was able to get of Olivia's sweet dress with the red roses in the front. All the other pictures I tried to take ended up with a gorgeous view of her back. She moves quickly.
Cousins-Sarah and Jennell, with one of our 26 stockings we filled. This elf is simplifying next year and plans on making a family recipe book for 2012. It may be more work, but something I've had in my mind for a while.

When my babies got to the house after getting stopping at DIA to get Maxx, he saw the gifts in the living room and wondered if any were for him. Names were not in plain sight, so he couldn't tell, but we knew which ones for him. I'm pretty sure he was pleased.
Now, I will relax and enjoy the twelve days of Christmas. Everyone is always in a rush to put things away, but when you work, the time is too short to enjoy it. So, in the way of the wise men that had to make that long journey many years ago, Christmas will not be "over" for me yet.

Keep Calm...this is my motto I must repeat when trying to find the pictures deep within my computer! I still can't find some of them that I wanted to post, but am too excited to wait for my boy (Sarah's hubby) to come home this weekend. He knows his "MOM" is just computer literate enough to create lots of problems for him to solve. I am keeping him!!
This project has been so much FUN and we have had the most wonderful person in charge-- Suzanne, better known as The Coloradolady. Even though she says she likes sweet tea-I won't deny her that pleasure. Why? Because she has a cabin in my homestate and only gets to visit Colorado and wants to retire here - the best state in the nation. Suzanne, you blessed me with your time and organization in this project. THANK YOU!
And so, my box arrived! I took pictures of ALL the wrapped packages! I can NOT find them. GRRR.

She told me there are a lot of pins, but I couldn't see any pin heads as they are cleverly hidden. Perfect points--I know it's difficult to see since I seem to still be on the "outs" with my phone/camera/pictures. Donna has so many great projects that she shares on her blog. Frosty Trees

The weather on Wednesday was perfect for transforming some small old trees into frosty white ones.
After three cans of white spray paint and three 24" trees and one larger one at 48" tall my index finger was tired. They make me think of a cold foggy morning when my evergreens are covered in frost and looking like a fairy forest.
Next on the list is to move some furniture around in the living room and get the mantle and hearth cleaned and ready for an inside forest for Christmas. Maybe the elves will decide to help.

Giving Thanks

Expressing my gratitude for my family and friends is important to me this week of Thanksgiving. Especially letting my blogging friends, from places I've never been in this wonderful world, know how dear you all are to me. Glorious Flag

The blue skies and warm fall temperatures were a bonus when we spotted this magnificent flag gently blowing in the breeze.
We just stood for several minutes watching the flag, waiting for the perfect moment. Trying to avoid the utility lines would have meant take a picture directly into the sun and wouldn't have worked. What a wonderful sight!

The bonus was this bright red and white quilt on the north side of the road on a shed of some sort. No home nearby or business, just know that it was also on East 8th Avenue.

Four, Flat, Friends

Four degrees this morning! Went out to start the car early so it could warm up. FLAT tire! Since we had our second snow storm yesterday and no school, I didn't use the car as we had blizzard conditions in the morning.
Thank goodness for fabulous FRIENDS that will travel out of the way to come and get me. And take me home after school! Got out the air compressor and filled the tire to see if it will stay up over night. If so, someone will follow me to town to get it fixed on Saturday. Grandpa and I fixed this one last summer together, so I do know how it do it. Just don't want to in this cold air! I love how my friends take care of me. They are the best!!

On the way to visit my sweet MIL at our local senior care facility, I turned the corner one block too soon and found a new quilt block!

Here and Gone

Last Wednesday morning we had snow...lots of it...8--12 inches. Nice, wet, slushy snow.
The next morning it was 4 degrees on the way to school!
Today the high was 63, so our Halloween snow is almost gone. My students and I will celebrate "Orange" You Glad You Can Read Day. Most classes in our school won't have Halloween parties. Our TPO will have "Trunk or Treat", though. November here we come!

New Phone

Alex and Sarah bought me a new phone last weekend. I'm not able to upload the pictures into my computer, so I had to email a picture to myself, then save it so I could put it here. What a lot of work. I'm not the most patient person anymore.
Alex will have to "do" something to make the phone talk to my computer so I hope he will be able to visit sometime soon. The photo looked a lot cleaner on the phone than it does here. That's all I know!

Two Flower Gardens

Sarah's great grandmother made this quilt for my godmother with her treadle sewing machine and it was hand quilted by friends at a quilting bee at her tiny house long ago. My cousin gave it to me last year and since I have my mother's (same pattern) I'm passing this one on to my baby. I've only done one block with English paper piecing with these hexagons and I'm thinking it will be the only one! I know my grandma made lots of quilts, but I don't know if she made more than two of this pattern. I'll have to investigate and talk to my remaining aunt and uncle and see if they have one, too.
On to my other garden...we will have a really hard frost tonight so I went out in the chilly wind after school and gathered the last miniature buds to dry for my potpourri jars.
I also brought in some asparagus ferns even though they tend to be rather messy, it's nice to start out next spring with larger plants. The amaryllis bulbs were lifted, too, and are ready for their resting period before I replant them in December.

First Frost

My Weather Bug said there was a threat of frost last night and when I went out to start the car, there was some REAL frost on the windshield! However just a difference of 3 feet saved the few flowers that are still blooming.

In ten days the Kale has turned from this:
to more purple showing. It should keep changing as the nights are cooler.
I brought this plant in the house last winter, but it was such a mess that I won't mind leaving it out when the frost sinks lower. Can't remember the name since I got to feeling awful this afternoon with a cough and dry throat and am ready for a rest.
Human contact at school means those germs occasionally meet a host...this time it was me. Grrr.

No snow here this past weekend. Ours out on the plains usually comes around Halloween.

October Blossoms

I do have falling leaves on the grass, but no sign of Jack Frost! Average date for our first frost is October 5, but it looks like it will be later this year. There really are leaves, but they are small ones from my Linden tree. You are able to click on the picture and see things better.
The allysum smells so sweet when I come home late in the afternoons, as well as the second blooms on the phlox.
Water keeps these babies happy and they look better now than they did when it was 95-100 each day.

My mom had some extras and gave me several packs of this color.
With school, watering the dry flowers and yard, trying to mow, going to see my dear momma, and to Denver to see my sweethearts, I don't have much time left to visit and write. Notice I didn't mention anything about cleaning (which is not a priority) or bell practice and reading a bit to relax before bed. Living life just keeps me busy. Relaxing today with Sarah and Alex, both here for the first time since July 25. The dough is rising for cinnamon rolls so must check on it and make some lunch! Take care and visit when you can!

Play Time

This past weekend I was able to stay in Denver and play at Sarah and Alex's. They were having another overnight guest that I didn't have to displace by sleeping in her bed as she has a portable crib. We were too busy to take pictures, though.

Lots of pretty things, but my house is full and I need to make more trips to GW and not bring any thing home. Sarah did find a sweet china creamer, but I forgot to take a picture of it.
The flowers in front of the shops did catch my eye, though, and since they don't move as fast as Miss Cupcake, I did take a picture of the yellow flowers and the hibiscus.
There's an old potentilla bush that is going to be replaced by some of these next summer. Cooler weather is here this week so I might get it dug up. I need another 3 day weekend to just spend time at home in my yard.

Today's Flowers

This garden of tropical looking hibiscus is about 20 miles east of Fort Collins. To see the blossoms better, you may click and enlarge the photos.
Spread your hand out and you'll be able to tell the size of the flowers.
It was bright and sunny during the afternoon, but was told they look better in the morning. Like most of us, I'm sure. ;D

Lovin' the Heat

I'll have lots of seeds from the plants.

These have been the best looking petunias this summer. They haven't stopped blooming even though we've have over 44 days above 90-100 degrees. Not a record, but it sure seems like one.
This is a dark variety of the sweet potato vine family. It has lavender bell shaped flowers!
And after taking the picture, I realized the individual leaves are my favorite shape. I must always look at the whole mass of dark leaves instead of each small heart.
Reminds me of a song we sing in church--"Open my Eyes". It also makes me think of our relationship with our God. ♥ to ♥

Trick or Quake

What happened here? Tremors from the southern Colorado quake OR...
has someone been playing with my pictures? I really think I would have tried to fix them if I had noticed them last night before bed. They looked askew before school this morning and made me wonder if the wind whistled down the hall last night (it really did blow hard for about three minutes) or the tremors traveled farther north than anyone knows.

Whatever...at least I stayed awake long enough to wonder and post. This heat makes me weary as I get up early to water for two hours before I leave for school. Water...more precious than gold.

HOME - Exterior

The newlyweds have been here for almost a month. I went for a visit and was able to take a current picture of their HOME.

The front entrance is now where a living room window was before the remodel.
The posts are solid wood and were stained to match the front door. The mailbox is so cute and perfect for that spot! Ali's parents did such a great job. I'm sure it was frustrating at times, but everyone seems so happy to be HOME.

More boxes have been unpacked and put away and a few things are now up on the walls which makes it more like HOME.

On the Road Again

Isn't this the most exciting post for the first week of school?
New smooth pavement for the seven mile drive to school. But wait...my road is closed?!
One morning I counted eight trucks lined up with asphalt ready to dump on the road and be rolled down.
On Wednesday I decided the buses would have to get down the road to pick up the kids, so they'd allow me to drive on the road, too. I had to get to school to take care of those kids, right? So instead of taking the LONG way around, I pulled right onto my road and headed west and actually only had to wait a few minutes for the flagger to let me past the stop sign. I am so thankful I don't have that job in our 95-100 degree days this past week.

So the first week was only three days. Took a few kindergartners and first graders to their classrooms. No tears the first day, but one little guy must have been tired this morning and did NOT want to come in and start his day with us. Checked on him later and he was fine! So starts another year. On the road again.

Today there were three birds playing in the sky-two pelicans and a hawk. The thermals and gentle breeze let them circle and play. No picture could capture their grace and what I thought would be pure joy. Imagine. It will be there. Only in your mind.

After a day inside for teachers, coming home to these heavenly phlox was refreshing. I love to double click on the pictures to see them LARGER than life.
First day back for staff-August 10!!!
The air is so sweet in the front of the house that it should be bottled and sold as perfume.
It's odd that I can remember their name, but have forgotten the name of the pink variety. Add pink is my favorite color.

Besides being the first day back to school, I should now have faster internet. And wouldn't you know I wanted to try it out right away and blogger was not letting anyone log on - they were fixing something. So I still had to wait! I'm praying for patience...NOW! ;D...♥♫

Moving In

Ali's house has occupants! Her family bought the house almost across the street at the end of last October. The outside walls remained the same, but most everything else changed.

Kitchen back door before:

New French doors and a walk in pantry.

STEEP stairs with not even space for a person's foot to stand on each step.

Half wall and a small closet removed. Notice the handrail angle-almost like a ladder!

Living room now has a cathedral ceiling.

The picture below shows the former bedroom that became the shower and the narrow hall with a linen closet, the kitchen closet, and a peek into the kitchen.

New counter tops and the curved shelves taken out at the end of the cooking island so there's more space for Ali to maneuver around in the kitchen.

I'm so happy to see that there is still a curved arch way into the living room!

At the bottom of the stairway there is a small hall going to Sarah and Alex's bedroom or to the bathroom. If you go through these double doors, you are in another room that doubles as a bedroom/office area. The bed is just to the left in the picture.

The short wall makes it seem more like a bedroom.

Both bedrooms now have the egress windows required by code.

Everything smells new because it is!! Lots of work to do and a few things to move from my house that haven't fit in the car. I'm just happy they have a home to live in! We are thankful for all the work that has been done to this house to make it as nice for Sarah and Alex as it is for Ali.

It's been a while since I've joined with everyone and their gorgeous flowers around the world.
The petunias are happy in the heat, but the phlox would like it just a bit cooler than 95-100 for the past twelve days.

After the reception at church we had a picnic supper at home. Nothing fancy (i.e. rented=$$) as the whole wedding was very thrifty.

We've been moving Sarah, Alex, Maxx, and Ali into the remodeled house this week, so we are looking forward to resting up before we move more boxes from here to Denver. She is her mother's daughter, after all!

More Wedding

My patience for loading lots of pictures is nil...I did get the dishwasher unloaded, filled, laundry sorted and started, trash bagged, and other daily chores finished. Faster internet is coming when it's cooler so the guys can work on the roof and attic(?) without melting up there.

Guests were "finger printed" and leaves were added to the wedding tree. Sarah loves owls and found this unique guest book on line!
Jade grabbed bunches of petals and threw them down the aisle. It cracked me up. Olivia is looking at the "mess" behind them, but she came all the way down to the front with Jade!
My brother, Sarah's godfather, walked her down to meet Alex.
I made the ring pillow with two of Wally's shirts and Sarah picked one of his bow ties to put around it.

Sarah Josephine and Aura, Alex's sister-in-law. We missed having his parents, but they weren't able to come from the Philippines for the wedding.
Sarah and Alex exited to Linus and Lucy by Vince Guaraldi. Their cake topper had magnets so they'd be kissing, but they were not matched correctly and wouldn't link together! Yummy cupcakes frosted and decorated by Solana, Joyce, and Aunt JoAnn. They did it at church before the wedding because it was too hot at home! Solana filled them Friday afternoon with rapsberry whipped cream. Oh. my. goodness! Divine!

Celebration

My baby's beautiful!
We had lots of tears in the weeks before this day because we were missing her daddy. She carried him with her on her bouquet. I didn't know it until I saw the pictures, then cried once more.
The cousin's daughters were flower girls and this is probably the only moment they had their headbands and shoes on at the same time!
With thanks to Aunt JoAnn for making the tutus and Aunt Ginny for getting the matching shoes and leotards, our wee ones were too cute!
Sarah brought home flowers from Safeway in Denver and the "maids" made the bouquets. The one with the crystals in the middle of each rose was Sarah's and she included one red rose in memory of Wally.
Alex and Sarah had a small cake for cutting and the guests were served cupcakes that she baked. A former student and friend of mine filled them with the yummiest raspberry cream filling, frosted and decorated them with lavender sugar sprinkles.

We had a beautiful day for the wedding. The bride was radiant, the girls beautiful and the men wore barongs from the Philippines and looked so handsome!
I was so tired on Sunday that I got up REALLY late, AND took an afternoon nap. More later.♥♫

Colorado Monsoon

Colorado has a summer weather phenomenon that brings rain in July and August.
We've had rain for about eight days now and yesterday I went outside and heard a motor. I thought it was from a four wheeler, but none was in sight. It was a pump to drain the neighbor's pond (aka field)! I've never seen this field flood in more than 14 years!
It did make for a damp morning with these tiny drops on my Black Hills pine, my favorite evergreen with short, short needles.
The third group of lilies is now blooming and luckily were protected from the winds that came with the storm.
They also had rain drops.
Special note for Sarah: I did sew all day...but am taking a wee break. My problem is that I sew like I did when I was in 4-H and earned champion ribbons. I need to just "let it go" and GET IT DONE.

What dress?

With special thanks to my friend, Joyce, we created two arrangements for the candelabras at church next Saturday. These were from silk flowers that were free, as I already had them.
For some reason I picked up two of the same small birdhouses last week when I went to Denver to fit Sarah's dress.
They are perfect accents that we decided to leave unfinished. Joyce is so creative and we had a nice visit while we played.

Oh, and the dress? I'm working on it. I promise!

I've been busy with wedding tasks while the garden does its own thing...grow and bloom.
The white and pink lilies are gone, now the dark pink ones are showing off.

At the other end of the garden the red ones are also opening. Much darker than the picture below.
And my happy flower, the daisies are looking pretty!
This would be the one summer that I wish every thing would bloom at once on July 23, Sarah and Alex's wedding day. But I've worked hard to have blossoms from March to October, so that won't happen this year or any other. Family and friends will be helping me out in the next two weeks to complete all the details.

Crystals and Pearls

It's been a while since I've made any jewelry - got these four necklaces finished for the bridesmaids.

Swarovski crystals and pearls.

They look so much prettier in person and have lots more sparkle! They are on a long runner I found at GW. I doubt that it was ever used as it's in perfect condition.

Sea Shells and Lavender Bells

There's a third color of Canterbury Bells--Lavender. I'm lovin' these new flowers in my garden. This one fell over, most likely in one of our many wind storms.
On one of my trips to Denver, I found this 3 tierd shelf. Don't know what it's really for, but it was cheap, so it came home with me.
Had a box of 100 sea shells from a former student so decided to put them outside for the summer.
When I taught First Grade we celebrated the 100th Day of school by bringing in collections. Amber brought this magnificent set of shells for the kids to see.
Her mom said they were going to throw them away! She asked if I wanted them-what teacher in her right mind would say no??!!

I ♥ them!!!

I'm sure they came right from the beach and have a soft chalky feel. Lucky me!

Here's what was blooming today-PINK Canterbury bells. I hope they will produce seeds so they'll be back next year!
Missouri primroses. This plant just gets larger each summer and has interesting seed pods.

My newest flowers, planted last spring, are blooming.
They are lovely Canterbury bells, biennials, with soft sun light in the evening. These are the survivors of the grasshopper plague, Summer 2010.
And, yes, the little hoppers are back. Again.
The morning sun is brighter, but the flax is blooming so I had to take more pictures this morning.
Flax.
Pink makes me happy.
Company's coming tomorrow, so I need to keep sorting and cleaning. Then I promised my nephew, aka Santa, that I'd make his favorite meal for supper tonight. He's so easy to please-meatloaf.

Paradise

Other than the howling wind the last two days, not much was accomplished outside. This morning I had to remove a rose that didn't survive our winter and planted a new one. I borrowed this picture of one from a garden center, since I'm too lazy to look through my pictures right now.
It's called Paradise, planted in memory of Wally. Someday I'll plant the other kind again now that I know the correct way to plant full size roses. My miniatures are much easier to plant and keep alive.

Not much happening around here except cleaning and sorting and taking loads of things to the local Good Will, now that we have one in Fort Morgan. I gave away a big bag of shirts and kept some to cut up into quilt blocks-one set from the pastels and the other from all the western shirts. Both quilts will be someday projects.

Colorado Columbines

Wednesday I went to Greeley to get my mom's groceries after priming walls in Denver on Monday and Tuesday. Although I wasn't as tired and sore as I was the very first night after we worked, I was happy to sit and drive.
These are my mom's columbines and we let them grow where ever they sprout.
And whatever color they want to be. Lots of blue this year.
Some white with pale yellow.
All of God's creations are heavenly to my mom and me.
Mine are getting very thin and I need to plant more seeds this fall. Maybe I'll find the packet Sarah and I brought back from our road trip last summer. ♥♫

Mexican Primrose

It was a perfect morning to be out in the garden pulling weeds. This is the first time I've ever had so many Mexican (evening) primroses blooming. The are in a bed where I put mulch last summer and they must have liked it.
They are pest free at the moment and I haven't seen the millions of baby grasshoppers that I expected. Maybe the cold spring helped to kill the eggs.
Now I must work on things inside this afternoon. Really. I should. I'll have to ignore the call from outside my door. It's really persistent and LOUD. Wedding details need to be taken care of INSIDE. INSIDE...

Barn Quilts

When taking various routes from Point A to Point B I'm sometimes lucky enough to find a new Barn Quilt.
This one uses the company's colors to create the pattern.
Last Sunday while showing off some of the BQ's in Fort Morgan, we saw this one across from the corner where we were ready to turn. Too many shadows for a great picture this morning, but I take them when I go to town, not planning very well for perfect light.

We spotted this one about a half mile off the road so I went to make sure it really was a BQ block. Couldn't get a clear picture--maybe an eighth of a mile away--so the zoom did its best. I'm not tramping through the fields to get closer!
I know where a few more are that I haven't taken yet, but would like to call and get permission to go in the yard as it is up a long lane. It is a thrifty pastime as all I do is take a detour or two on my way there and back home.

Owls in Love

We are having cupcakes and punch at the church after the wedding and want everyone to have a small favor. I found these owls at Crafts 'n Things magazine and know Sarah loves owls.
Printed some on lavender paper and cut them out with one of my fancy punches to glue on seed packets we found on clearance at JoAnn Fabrics.
Used glue dots to stick them on and covered up the wording that won't be necessary. Now I need to either put something on the top or fold them over so they stand up on each table.
Also got the ribbons on the bubbles. We've always loved bubbles and I just may need to make a batch of solution for the wedding picnic. I have all sorts of huge wands from my last day of school celebrations. We always loved making bubbles as large as bowling balls. They're magical~☺!! Hmmm...will have to ask Sarah and Alex if they want to act like little kids.

The plants love today's hot and humid weather.
Top picture was taken after last week's mini hailstorm and the one below this afternoon-same plant. They do recover quickly when the hail isn't so bad.

The End

Pots are finished. Last nine this morning. The end...except for a few perennials that need to be planted, but I won't count them. And the weeds, and moving a few plants, and mowing again and again. I love to work in the yard.
I need to bring some more watering cans around to the front. I moved these three last summer and ran out of ambition.

I might be going to the big city tomorrow to paint. Ali's house was broken into last night and wires were cut and bathroom pipes were ruined and flooded the bathroom in the basement. Sarah thinks we will be able to work on the main floor and flood people will have to evaluate the damage this afternoon. GRRRR! They need to camp out and put BUSTER on patrol!
Or should I hire my friend, Remington? Buster and BooBoo get along just fine, so he and Rem should be able to handle those intruders and scare the pants off of them.

Hazy sky this morning, perfect for more mowing.
And taking a few pictures.
A prairie sunflower growing in a crack on the back slab of cement. Not a patio by any means.
Wild roses with the scent that comes only once a year.
Boxes came today from Fire Mountain Gems~ crystal and pearl beads and wedding decorations/supplies from Nebraska's Oriental Trading. More WORK. Making jewelry for Sarah and her four friends will not be difficult at all.

Hope the flowers keep growing. Planted only three more pots today. Need to go to town for a few more petunias after I wash the dirt away from mowing.

July 23 is coming quickly. 14 more flowers pots were filled today. Yesterday afternoon we had a quick hailstorm, but luckily it was small hailstones so only the fragile blossoms were ripped on the 15 containers that I planted. The flowers need to grow and be pretty for our wedding picnic.
Sarah Josephine, Sarah, Alex and I (me, only a bit ;D )worked on invitations on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Sarah Jo we have a picture of them.
Oops, I'll need to keep the camera ready at all times! Preparation-my new focus word. AKA WORK~I need to get busy and stay focused.

Happy Face

Mine is the happy face because
1. school is out and
2. I planted 15 pots this morning!

These pretty pinks are THE LAST of my tulips-some sort of double delight. The two bags of bulbs I purchased last fall were the same, but the others were a darker pink and bloomed earlier.
I must have planted these much deeper.
The wind is blowing again so it was difficult to get a clear picture of these happy faces.
More gardening to do and mowing pasture grass and lawn before they grow more. The rain sure makes everything happy. Now, if the wind would go away!

Journey to Joy

My sweet friend, Karen, invited Sarah and me to the Ladies Spring Brunch at the Wesleyan Church in Greeley.
We toured the tables before we were seated.
This one with the spring colors was ours! Cute cupcakes in baskets too pretty to eat. I saved mine for my mom, but will enjoy the cute favors in the bag that all had a cupcake theme, too. Even on our place cards.

I love this stemware and the china with the pretty roses.
A teacher that once taught with us did this table. The other picture I loaded was supposed to be with it, but it popped up somewhere else and I'm not sure why!?

All in all there were more than 21 decorated tables with eight ladies and young women at each table. Our hostess had her DIL and two granddaughters, a friend and the three of us. After eating and visiting we assembled in the Worship Center for our speaker, Juli Hobin and her story of Journey to Joy.

God blessed us that morning with friends, fellowship, food, and an amazing story of forgiveness. ♥♫

Surprise!

Last Thursday our school secretary brought a box into my room with a surprise in it. Knowing I hadn't ordered anything I couldn't believe it was for me!
Inside the box was a vase and bouquet of 100 flowers for Mother's Day from Sarah and Alex!! I didn't actually count them, but Sarah told me there were supposed to be that many!
For pictures it is sitting on a kitchen chair with no room to spare.

We were all so tired by Sunday afternoon we didn't want to do anything! My plan is to go to bed soon and catch up on some rest. This hot (87 degrees today) and windy weather makes me weary--it dries out everything that I've watered.

Simple Gifts from Egg Cartons

Kids in school love to create things and this teacher wants her students to develop a life long love of creating and enjoying making memories.
Budgets are very limiting so instead of buying cotton linter to make pressed paper ornaments, we tear egg cartons into small pieces and soak them in water. Put several scoops into a blender with LOTS of water so you won't burn up the motor. Especially when you have to borrow a friend's blender because you can only find 3 lids, 2 jars, 1 base, but no blades that do the real work~grr... still don't know where that piece is hiding!!
Blend for several minutes until the pieces look like moosh. Most everyone said, "Yuck!"
Drain as much excess water out and plop into the molds. Use a sponge to soak up excess water. Wring it out and repeat. Then use old towels to finger press the pulp into the nooks and crannies so you get a good impression. Repeat with a dry section of the towel. Again and again.
Let the molds dry overnight or in an oven at a very low temperature, 200-225 degrees for several hours. I helped these dry by putting them in the microwave for 1 minute. The molds will get very hot, so be careful.
When they are dry, remove the shape from the mold and paint or decorate. The teapot is just out of the mold and the heart has been painted with a lavender metallic paint. We aren't very fancy because we don't have a lot of time. Ribbons, lace, and little flowers make them even sweeter. Most students wanted to make one for Father's Day, too! I encouraged them to try to things on their own with simple materials found at home--like egg cartons.

Happy Mother's Day to all the women in the village. Cherish those children I have for only a short time each day. They are such a gift to me. ♥♫

Farewell Daffodils, Hello May Flowers ♥

It's time to join Today's Flowers! With a temperature today (Sunday) of 92 degrees I won't be needing that snow shovel.

May? May!! May I safely put my snow shovel away now?
Time to say farewell to the happy daffodils. I have at least eight different "pockets" in the front. If there is an empty spot in the fall, I start digging a hole and put a bag of bulbs in and wait for spring.
Each group is a different color.
With trumpets from small to large. With all the wind, they are wearing some tattered and torn petals. Farewell.
My tulips are planted deep in the soil so they won't bloom so early and get knocked down by the gusty, almost constant, winds of spring.
Today was a wonderful, warm, and calm afternoon when I got home.

It gets better every year, but I do have some dead wood to trim out.
Pink flowering almond. Not many buds are open yet, so I'm hoping we won't have a really cold night again. Last year only half of the bush blossomed.
Being outside helped me relax after school. May is always crazy busy with so much to do! Cookbook project is finished but must make more copies. More people came to our Literacy Night and I promised the kids they would have a cookbook soon. I even get to go on the Fourth Grade field trip to Centennial Village in Greeley. I love that place!

Easter Flowers

When there are flowers here or at my mom's I'm ready to join in Today's Flowers.
The sweet daffodils continue to bloom and are lasting a long time as it is so chilly here.
Over the years I've planted tulips for my mom and this was the perfect weekend for me to see them.
Sometimes I'm a week too early or too late to enjoy them.

April Violets

Can you see it?
Today is the first day I spotted my sweet violets.
There will be many more to make my heart happy.
There are many new ones popping through the dry crust, too. It's a wonder they can break through because it's been so dry here............
This one had to come inside with me while we wait for some sort of moisture. I suppose it is going to have to come from under ground, through the well, instead of dropping down from the sky.

White Rain and Sunshine

Out on the plains where it's windy, my early blooming plants must be sturdy.
Even though some are shy and peek out at the world.

Lavendar and Purple

On the way in the house I saw something blooming and found my Corsican Violet. It was windy so I pinched it off and brought it in the house to enjoy. There will be more very soon.
It is nestled in among some rocks and I'm hoping there will be some new plants from last summer's seeds.
I'm also loving my miniature iris. They started blooming on April 1 - always early!
They are only about 3 inches tall.
Today's flowers are also the colors Alex and Sarah are having for their wedding. We seem to be collecting things each time we go shopping. Ribbons, cupcake papers, program papers, punches, embossing ink and powder, etc. I'll not be seeing my table top for a long while!

When I went thrifting for the common white vases for the reception tables, my eyes spotted this piece of Fenton. I saw the price tag that said $1.39 and was so excited! The top didn't seem to match, but I knew the bottom was the real thing. They really do go together and the piece is a "Fairy Light". Perfect...Sarah loves Fenton AND Faeries! Ebay had several and Replacements had two available for $64!! I think that was for each one (Happy Dance!!).
On to another thrift shop where I found a vase to match one I already had. It wasn't quite the deal, but still rather cheap. A pair will look nice on the main reception table filled with summer flowers.
This collection of white bud vases will be filled with flowers for the guest tables. Maybe three on a table in the center with some other decorations. Clear glass vases are much easier to find, but Sarah prefers the white of milk glass. Must it be genuine Fenton to be milk glass or can that label refer to any white glass??
This Royal Albert mug was a bargain at 75 cents. I can't use it for tea because the handle was glued and I don't want it to leak. The coaster is from England and the napkin is one of six for $5 found several years ago in Denver. I love the basket on the corner!
Swans seem to have taken up a spot in my heart and are growing in number around here.
When I picked these up I was surprised that they are actually candle holders. I think they'll be quite pretty on a tea table.

Lots of work to do, so I must stop and get busy. I may actually get to work outside a bit today!!

Barn Quilt

During spring break I was in town and saw a wooden frame on the back of the theater. Later in the week I was back in town for cat food and saw what I imagined was going to be on the wall.
This black and white quilt! I can't remember what color the wall was before, but now it is a bright aqua and this block looks so sharp. Several of the businesses on Main Street have doors leading to the parking lot in the back and have made these entrances very attractive. It started last year when our downtown Main Street was redone and the street was closed.
The Cover is located at 314 Main Street, Fort Morgan.

My favorite quilt shop, Inspirations, recently put this block in their window. It is very difficult to take a nice picture when they are mounted inside the window, so what I thought looked like streaks are actually reflections of the street and sidewalk.

Flop, Success, and a Happy Heart

We want to serve cupcakes at the wedding so practicing and testing ideas now is a good thing. First FLOP! I remembered reading about a recipe for Empty Tomb rolls--the ones for Easter morning that are made with a marshmallow that melts inside, leaving a hollow in the middle. I thought that idea would work to make a hollow space for yummy filling to be piped in. WRONG!!
Sticky mess all over, not really bad to eat, but NOT what I had in mind. Williams-Sonoma to the rescue...a cup cake corer! Now for another test later this week.

Thrift shop success was finding this sweet tea pot for $2. Half off day at GW!! I think it is just so cute and perfect for spring.
And a Happy Heart came in the mail last Friday for me. I was one of the first five people to comment at Evelyn and Rose on Pay it Forward. Susan made this heart for me with Wally's and my initials after she read about us. It is a perfect gift as I collect hearts and counted over 45 in the kitchen this morning and will be finding a perfect spot for this one as well! Now I need to mail out mine as soon as they are finished. Warning: Sarah don't read under the picture!
Because Susan is so sweet, she also sent one for Sarah and Alex, but I won't post a picture yet because they haven't seen it yet. Last weekend was a hectic one for Sarah as she moved out of her apartment and moved things into storage. Ali's house isn't ready yet, but someone needed to move in the apartment, so Sarah and her room mate moved out a bit earlier than planned. For now she is staying with friends in Denver, but may be driving from here twice a day during part of April.

Pay It Forward

It's always a good thing for us to stop in at Michael's when we make the 40 plus mile trek to "town". Lucky for us there were some bargains when we went last weekend.
After seeing pretty ribbons added to spiral notebooks SOMEWHERE(?) last week, I had to try it out. Sarah and I decided we liked the pink one better with the wider ribbons. I tied the pink ones with regular double knots and liked them better than the loops on the green and purple one.
I finished the green and purple one before Sarah went back to Denver and she is using it for wedding notes. (happy sigh!) ;D

Now for PAY IT FORWARD-

When visiting a Colorado blog, French Laundry, I read about this idea going on in the Land of Blog. It sounds like a lot of fun, and I must be crazy to want to be doing this, but it does sound very easy to participate because you don't have to send anything out today or tomorrow, but you MUST send something. And since it is something handmade, you know this takes some time to do. Please note: I am a teacher (very little free time) and a slow worker, so the wait time may be a little longer. Sarah and Ali will live here when the house is handicapped accessible for Ali.
Lots of changes inside and out.
Down and up. This stairway will be safer.
French door to backyard.
New front door where the window is so Ali can navigate in and out with her wheelchair.
New door meant changing sewer lines!
Muscle power to move the dirt.
New layout for Ali's suite. Hmm...wonder where the furnace flue will go?
Haven't seen blue prints for the main floor. I am experiencing this remodel through Ali's mom's pictures. I was able to see the "before" any changes in December. We've been waiting for all the permits, drawings, planning approvals, etc. I have all the fun and none of the responsibility of this whole process.
Demolition of walls and ceilings means carpenters can get busy.
Sarah works for an amazing family and loves Ali like a little sister! They are going to be roommates and Alex will be joining them. The three of them will be a fantastic family together. Between decorating a new home and planning a wedding Sarah is going to be such a busy girl! And I will be happy to help!! ♥♫

Fancy name for the amaryllis-when I'm doing a spell check, I often click on Wikipedia and learn a few new tidbits.
I took this Christmas gift to school and planted it on January 13. I thought the buds would open last weekend and the flowers would be looking their best while we were off. We were lucky, though, because the plant was flowering on Tuesday.
The kids were thrilled to see the two blossoms and have been watching all week as the third and fourth buds develop. The third bud blossomed today (Friday) and the last one will most likely be open when we go back on Monday.
I love the veins as I removed the color from the picture. It reminds me of some of my iris. With a low of 8 degrees this morning and a high of only 23, it may be a long wait for gardening.

Birthday Wish

On my way home after celebrating my birthday with my mom and brother I stopped in Eaton at Alley Arts that is in the old drugstore that we used to get meds for my dad and mom. There are more than 20 booths with lots of old treasures!
We used to have similar pictures on the wall on both sides of my piano. I have wanted to find a pair for a while and told myself if I ever did see them I'd get them. The ones I found have dark frames that will be changed when I decide what color will look best. When I got home I discovered that they aren't even by the same artist and that they were a common piece of art around the time my mom and dad were married in the 40's. In my mind I always called them Mr. and Mrs. Claus and had to laugh when I heard Sarah describe them exactly the same way!

Celebrating my birthday with this old couple made me happy!

Full Moon Friday-SNOW MOON

Sarah Josephine called and asked if I'd seen the moon tonight. No, so I went out at 5:30 before supper and looked east. She's never seen it so BIG, but because I live out in the country and can see the eastern horizon, October is when the moon is REALLY HUGE! Neither shot is what I'd like to share, but is the best the little camera could do. If you click on the pictures twice, they can be enlarged.

♥ Day, Part 2

The candy is ready to deliver in the VALENTINE cans. Zach said he likes M & M candies. Sarah Jo won't open hers, so it is filled with rice! She hasn't opened her Halloween treat because she likes it for a decoration.
Sarah loves owls, so one is for her and one for her sweetheart, Alex. The others will be delivered to Grandma and Grandpa after school tomorrow.

These really are easy to make once you have saved the right kind of fruit cans and opened them on the bottom. I wash and dry them, then spray the tops outside on a nice day-like today-65 degrees!! Fill them with treats, and glue or tape the bottom back on. I've discovered that tape holds them shut just fine and is so much easier than trying to glue them. Cover the cans with paper and decorations and thread ribbon through the pull tab on the top.

I found these cute tags and cards to print for Valentine's Day. After I cut the tags out I glittered the bubbles, added string, and attached them to the bottles of Softsoap. I want to share them with my friends at school tomorrow even though the kids celebrated last Friday.

Tea Time Tuesday Anniversary!

Sandi is celebrating her first anniversary for Tea Time Tuesday! I try to join whenever I can and didn't want to miss this party.

If I took time to find a tea candle for this cup I found while wandering around GW on Saturday, I'd miss the fun. It has the prettiest pink roses and hearts for Valentine's Day and will be fun to have on the table/shelf.
I ♥ finding new books that make me happy and here is my newest one that would be delightful for Sandi's new grandbaby! It would be perfect with a certain little tea set she shared recently! Ruby has been invited to have tea with the Queen and daydreams about the event. She is reminded to use her very best manners by her mother as she is dressing for the tea. A bit of a twist at the end of the story just made me smile.
Sandi always includes some of the best quotes and life lessons with her tea time and I'm sharing something I made for Sarah Josephine. She went to San Diego over the Thanksgiving break last November and I asked for some sand from the beach. She did have to explain to the security people why she was going home with a big bag of sand. Ooops! Thankfully she didn't miss her flight back to Colorado!
I filled this thrifted bottle with the sand and glued some buttons together to seal the top. I typed some of her favorite verses, then cut and mounted them onto card stock. You can click on any pictures to enlarge them to read them more easily.
Sarah had written in the sand and taken a picture, so I printed her BELIEVE onto paper that I trimmed to fit onto the bottle and asked her to bring me a shell from her beach visit. I glued it under the first part of believe.
I put it all together with Psalm 139: 17-18 around the side. Punched holes in the tags, slipped them onto a split ring with a heart and some ribbon. I added a ribbon, a few roses and seashells.

I'm happy to say Sarah loved it when I gave it to her before school. Thanks to Barbara Jean at Treasures from the Heart for the idea. This bottle was unique and I'd love to find another one someday so I could make another one for my Sarah Joy!

Another Barn Quilt

This past Monday was a day off from school as we observed MLK Day and on the way to get dog food stopped by for this quilt.
This one is Dog Tooth Violet, 835 E. Platte Avenue, in town at a pet shop.

Barn Quilts

Last year I wanted to find all the Barn Quilts in Morgan County. Well, it got to be summer and H.O.T. and the desire to drive around in a car that needs the air conditioner fixed was on the lowest part of my to do list.
This Palm Leaf is on the north side of the Christ Congregational Church. Three colors of green leaves.
It seems that most quilts are not on the typical barn. Maybe I need to get my storage shed turned around so I could have wall to display a quilt, too. It's shaped like a miniature barn, so it would have to be a small quilt block. Now to find someone with a big loader and some time to move it!

It's #127 and I've not had anything outside to share for several months.
This pretty geranium is inside while the snow is covering the ground outside where everything is brown and dormant.
The petals have such a delicate sheen and since it's PINK, it makes me happy. I'm also happy to join Today's Flowers once again. Thanks to their work we can enjoy many flowers!

Snow Day

Yesterday I stayed in and watched it snow
BIG, FAT, FLUFFY FLAKES. However, they were a bit smaller in real time, because the shutter was slow! Most of the time our snow comes down sideways, with WIND.
My big boy doesn't mind the snow at all. He was watching me stick the camera out the back door. After I did my feeding chores, I stayed in the rest of the day.

Snow day today. No school. Just saw the road grader going by to work on the snowy roads. The problem is my driveway always gets closed in and I can't get out!

Santa's Visit

Santa came to "our" house! Actually Gran'ma and Gran'pa's before traveling around the world.
His elves filled the stockings that had to hang on the "emergency fireplace". There wasn't room anywhere else in the house!
All the nieces were there--there's TWO! Jennell and Sarah.
Great nephew, Joey, who is almost as tall as Zach.
